Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt

Corporate presentation

Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is Germany´s national metrology institute and an important service provider for science, business, and society in questions of measurement.

Around 2100 employees work at PTB with its headquarters being in Braunschweig and other locations being in Berlin. In the Units and Time Act, PTB is specifically tasked with disseminating legal time in Germany.

PTB operates a clock network with several atomic clocks, such as the cesium microwave clocks and several optical atomic clocks. This unique infrastructure comprises an optical fiber network connecting the different laboratories to a central frequency comb for frequency comparisons. Part of PTB is the Quantum Technology Competence Center (QTZ), which combines PTB’s competence in quantum technology with the mission to support German industry in metrology as a governmental body. The goal of QTZ is to support the transfer of quantum technology from basic research into industrial applications.

Role in the project

The PTB group at the Institute for Experimental Quantum Metrology (QUEST) led by Prof. Tanja Mehlstäubler is world-known in the implementation of optical multi-ion clocks based on multiple Yb+ and In+ ions. In the Qu-PIC project, the group is responsible for the assembly of an ion-trap experiment. Benchmarking of the ion trap, light conditioning PIC, and stabilization of PIC laser for atomic clock and quantum sensing applications will be performed.

Facilities for the characterization of PICs from UV to NIR are available. That includes a microscope for beam shape tomography and a nano-positioner for fiber-to-chip alignment. Various laser sources ranging from 370 nm to 1650 nm are complementing the optical setup. A nanophotonic simulation toolbox utilizing commercial and open-source software (Ansys Lumerical, MEEP, SpinsB) enables rapid prototyping of photonic integrated components.
